Origin of The Caffrey Estate
Built in 1936 by Dorothy Cruikshank Snyder Cochran Caffrey, The Caffrey Estate was the first home constructed in what was then an undeveloped stretch of land. The estate originally encompassed the surrounding area before it was subdivided into the neighborhood that exists today.
Dorothy Caffrey lived a life shaped by privilege, heartbreak, and reinvention. After traveling the world and living in places as far-reaching as Europe and the East Coast, including a royal marriage abroad, she ultimately chose to return and build a life in Reno. To her, the estate embodied a personal vision of the American dream: a place to create, reflect, and give back to the community through nonprofit work. She designed the colonial-style home as a haven for creativity and connection, which for decades served as a vibrant setting for poetry readings, artistic shows and cultural gatherings.
Today, the property is undergoing thoughtful renovation with the goal of honoring its cultural legacy and preserving the roots of the neighborhood it helped establish. As the original cornerstone of the area, the estate remains a symbol of the artistic, altruistic and historical spirit that shaped the community.
